With the Union government driving home the judicial impossibility of disentangling the Special Marriage Act from the web of personal laws for legalising same-sex marriages, the Supreme Court asked the Centre what administrative measures could be taken to improve the day-to-day lives of same-sex couples. “Short of marriage rights... what can the government do for long cohabiting couples?
